Overview

Heat in Plastic Industry

Plastic processing is heat processing: every injection moulding machine, extruder, hot-runner mould and thermoformer depends on heaters that hold the melt at exactly the right temperature. MaxVolt manufactures band, cartridge, hot-runner coil, cast-in and infrared heaters for processors and machine builders.

In plastic processing, a few degrees make the difference between a good part and a reject. Barrel zones, nozzles, hot-runner tips and dies each need steady, responsive heat — and when a heater fails, the machine stops.

MaxVolt supplies the full set of heaters a plastics plant uses every day, in standard sizes for quick replacement and in custom designs for special moulds, dies and machines.

Thermal Challenges

Problems we solve for this industry

Band heater burn-outs

Loose clamping and poor contact with the barrel make band heaters overheat and fail.

Our approach: Bands are made to the exact barrel diameter with proper clamping, sized for the zone.

Hot-runner tip temperature

Nozzle tips that run hot or cold cause drooling, stringing or frozen gates.

Our approach: Coil heaters with built-in thermocouples put the heat and the sensor right at the nozzle.

Energy lost from barrels

Bare barrel heaters radiate a large share of their energy into the shop.

Our approach: Insulated ceramic band heaters reduce those losses.

Uneven sheet heating

Uneven heating in thermoforming gives thin spots and webbing.

Our approach: Zoned infrared heaters let each area of the sheet be trimmed.

Applications

Applications & recommended heaters

Injection moulding barrels and nozzles

180–320 °C

Barrel zones and nozzle heating on injection moulding machines.

Extruders and dies

150–300 °C

Barrel, adaptor and die heating for pipe, profile, sheet and film extrusion.

Hot-runner moulds

180–320 °C

Manifold and nozzle heating in hot-runner systems.

Thermoforming and sheet heating

Heating plastic sheet before forming, and welding or bending.

Material dryers and hoppers

60–180 °C

Hot-air drying of hygroscopic resins before processing.

FAQs

Plastic Industry heating — common questions

Mica bands are compact and economical for normal temperatures. Ceramic bands handle higher temperatures and, with insulation, cut energy losses — a good choice for machines running round the clock.
